Kitchens and Kids 4 Design Ideas for Junior Chefs Custom Home New Kitchen Planning Glen Ellyn IL

Kitchens and kids are not mutually-exclusive terms. The kitchen is the heart of your home, and many children enjoy participating in food-preparation activities or simply spending time with their parents while they are cooking or baking. Rather than decide that this part of the house is mainly an adult space that sometimes accommodates children, why not incorporate the needs of the younger members of your family into your kitchen design? Here are 4 design ideas to bring kitchens and kids together in creative ways.

1. Work Space for Kids

Even very young children can be given some simple tasks to help out in the kitchen. By designating a work counter for them, you give them their own space to roll out cookies, mix ingredients, and the like. A low work counter can work well for this purpose, but it's not the only design choice you have. If you would rather that the young chef in your life have his or her own designated area that is away from the main traffic flow of the kitchen, then you may want to consider incorporating a low table and chair set into your design.

2. Under the Counter Refrigerator

Rather than have your child opening the main refrigerator in your kitchen often, a kid-friendly option is to include an under the counter refrigerator in your design. You can use it to store drinks and snacks for your child. Another good use for this feature is to give your young chef somewhere to store his or her creations until it's time to unveil them for the rest of the family at meal time.

3. Pull-Out Work Surface

If you would prefer not to designate a certain portion of your kitchen counter space for kids, you may want to incorporate a pull-out work surface under a counter. Both you and your child can put it to good use, and this option will not affect the overall design concept in your kitchen. Once you or your child finished the task at hand, the work surface is pushed under the counter until the next time it is needed.

4. Eat-at Kitchen Counter

For casual meals and snacks in your kitchen, have kids pull up a stool and sit down at the kitchen counter. This is a great way to stay connected with what is going on in your children's lives. Many great conversations between parents and children take place while both are engaged in another activity while in the kitchen. Your kids will like being close to you and you can supervise them while they are eating, drawing, or doing their homework easily.
